Over the last few months, we've had the pleasure of working closely with athletics coaches from across Scotland to explore the power and potential of mentoring in sport. Together, we’ve looked not only at mentoring approaches, but also at how to design and deliver effective mentoring programmes that truly support coach and people development.
This work has been both reflective and practical—rooted in real experiences and shaped by a shared commitment to creating a supportive and connected environment.
Throughout these sessions, the feedback from coaches has been inspiring:
“Very positive environment and clear use of frameworks to use going forward.”
“Clarity and emphasis on positive outcomes.”
“Listening and talking with different perspectives.”
“Very valuable to actively engage with athletes.”
“A very good atmosphere to promote confidence in using past experience to enhance mentoring skills.”
These comments speak to the value of creating space for honest conversations, shared learning, and practical tools mentors can take away and use.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to be working with sportscotland and Scottish Athletics to co-create a community of practice. This community will be a place where mentors can continue to explore mentoring, share their experiences, and grow their practice with the support of their peers.
